If you are adding assets from outside of Turtl that need editing, below are the dimensions used throughout Turtl as a guide. You will also find a list of (un)supported media types.

Title page image dimensions

Note: The default size is the smallest images should be, if you want to optimize for large screen sizes you can multiply the default by two, but ensure that the "Optimize" tick box is checked before uploading.

Content page image dimensions

Freeform page dimensions

Freeform is the default page type.

Choose between a 24-column grid with adjustable gaps (0-40px) or a 48-column grid with no gaps.

Learn more about Freeform vs. Column pages.

Column page dimensions

The images show the dimensions of the columns and rows in the Column page grid system on the Content pages. Using these dimensions, it is possible to design graphics to fill a given region within the grid.

Each image shows the grid in a different configuration, two, three, four, or five columns. The height of a line remains 20px in all cases, but the width of the columns and gutters varies, as indicated by the measurements shown.

Note: You may wish to increase the graphics to 150% or 200% of the size required (file size depending) to ensure they look as sharp as possible on high-definition displays. These larger graphics will be scaled down to fit.

Supported file types and recommendations

Supported Title page video file types

  • MP4 (max 720p recommended)

  • OGG

  • WEBM

  • GIF

Unsupported Title page video file types

  • MOV

  • WMV

  • AVI,

Notes on Title page videos

  • Aim to save your videos at file sizes below 1MB for best performance. File sizes up to 20MB can be uploaded but may affect loading speeds, so we recommend keeping it under 10MB

  • We'd also recommend using Handbrake.fr for video compression.

  • Trimming to around 10 seconds is advisable.

  • Videos have no audio, play automatically and loop forever.

  • You may set your video still frame within the editor. On the cover, this frame will be used when generating the sharing assets for your Doc and the thumbnail image in the contents menu.

  • Videos cannot be cropped in the editor in the same way images can. They will be centered by default.

Notes on Content page videos

  • Add videos to Content pages using the Video widget.

  • We integrate with Wistia, Vimeo, Youtube, Brightcove, Vidyard, or you can self-host an MP4 via URL. See article for more details.

  • Videos on Content pages do not auto-play.

  • Videos on Content pages do have audio.

Supported image file types

  • JPG (RGB, 72dpi, compress at -85%)

Getting the best from images

We recommend saving out images and brand assets at 2x (double) size before uploading them to Turtl.

So, for all of the (1x) units in this doc, simply double them on export (2x) for good results.

Note:

Be mindful of the size when you upload images; files that are too large can slow down the page load time and negatively impact the reader's experience.
