Account engagement (Pardot) tracking code and custom events

Using the Account engagement (Pardot) tracking code and custom events to centralize contact engagement data

You can add an Account Engagement tracking code to your Turtl Doc(s) to send contact activity, such as page views, to Account Engagement when they interact with a Turtl Doc. You can also choose custom events to send, such as read time, form submissions and link clicks. Once this activity data is in Account Engagement, it can be used to support various processes.

How to enable the tracking code

To enable the tracking code, please follow the steps below:

1. Access the Integrations Hub

To access the Integrations Hub, click on "Integrate" on the left-hand menu.

The Integrations screen will show all available integrations in a grid layout.

2. Enable the tracking code

Note: If you haven't connected Pardot to Turtl yet, follow the steps in Configuring your Account Engagement (Pardot) integration first.

Click on "Pardot" and go to the "Settings" tab. In the "Configure Pardot Integration" section, enter your Account Engagement campaign ID in the "Pardot Campaign ID" field and click "Save".

Note: The campaign ID must be the numeric Account Engagement campaign ID (for example, 284599), not the Salesforce campaign ID that starts with 701. You can find it in the tracking code for the campaign you want Turtl activity filed under, where it appears as piCId. Turtl can't send activity to Account Engagement without a valid campaign ID.

Click on "Reader Intent Data" to expand the section.

Toggle on "Enable Pardot Tracking code" to enable the tracking code for all Docs.

What information does the tracking code collect by default?

  • Page visit URL (Turtl Doc URL in our case)

  • Number of page views

  • Type of session (e.g. Entry point, Last page viewed)

  • Time spent on the page

  • Date and time of the session

How does the collected information appear in Account Engagement?

You can set up a test Doc, flip through it, and then check if the page views for that Doc came through. You can see these events in two key places:

1. In the Visitors report

Visitor and Prospect visits and page views can be found in the Visitors report.

To access the visitors report, navigate to "Prospects" -> "Visitors". The data appears in the visitor table under the graphs that display basic information about your visitors.

2. In the Prospect activities

Select a prospect from the visitor table in the Visitor report or the Prospect List under "Prospects" -> "Prospect List".

Prospect activities are visible from the "Overview" or the "Activities" tab.

Click on a "Visit" activity to see the full list of page views.

How to send custom events to Account Engagement

Note: This feature is available on our Grow AI and Scale AI plans. Please contact support if you want to upgrade your plan.

In the Integrations Hub, click on "Pardot", then go to the "Settings" tab and open the "Reader Intent Data" section.

Under "Custom events", events are grouped into five categories: Read time, Content interactions, Asset interactions, Data submission and Social sharing. Expand a category and select the events you want to send, or select "Select & create events for all" to enable every event in that category. It's a good idea to keep this as light as possible so you're not overloaded with information.

Turtl then sends each selected event to Account Engagement as a page view. You don't need to set anything up in Account Engagement for the events to appear on your prospects.

Notes:

  • The tracking code must be enabled and a valid campaign ID saved before custom events can be sent.

  • If our team previously set up custom events for you with a snippet, please contact our support team before you select any events. The snippet needs to be removed first, and the event names may differ from your current setup.

  • Please contact our support team to share your ideas if you want to track something else.

Setting up custom events in Account Engagement

Each custom event is sent with a URL in this format, using your Turtl domain (or your custom domain, if you have one):

https://<your Turtl domain>/track/event=<event>

For example: https://team.turtl.co/track/event=link_click

If you want an event to trigger automation in Account Engagement, create a Page action for it:

  1. Open the Page Actions page.

    • In Account Engagement, select "Marketing" -> "Automation" -> "Page Actions".

    • In the Lightning app, open the "Automations" tab and then select "Page Actions".

  2. Click "+ Add Page Action".

  3. Name the Page action (we recommend the event name).

  4. Enter the event URL. You can copy it from Turtl: in the "Custom events" section, each selected event shows its URL with a copy button. You can also find each event's value in the table below.

  5. (Optional) Select "Priority Page" if you want to call out this page view as a separate prospect activity, instead of bundling it with other page views.

  6. When finished, click "Create page action".

Notes:

  • Page actions only trigger for known prospects.

  • The URL uses the domain the reader has open. If your Docs open on more than one domain (for example, a custom domain and your Turtl domain), create one Page action for each domain.

  • Enter the URL exactly as shown, without a trailing /*.

How do these custom events appear in Account Engagement?

You can create a test Doc and trigger the custom events you have enabled.

Each custom event appears as a page view in the prospect's activities, and is filed under the campaign you added in Turtl's Pardot integration settings. The page title shows the event and its details, in this format:

Event name | Content: Doc name | Chapter: Chapter title | URL: Page URL | Workspace: Workspace name

Note: Turtl doesn't add prospects to Salesforce campaigns or set a campaign member status. This is controlled by your Account Engagement campaign settings.

If you created a Page action for an event and selected "Priority Page", the event is also called out as a separate prospect activity.

To see which prospects triggered an event, navigate to "Marketing" -> "Automation" -> "Page Actions" and select the Page action.
