UTM tags are snippets of information that can be added to your Turtl Doc URL to tell Turtl analytics (as well as other analytics tools) about where and how your content has been distributed. Analytics data can then be filtered by these tags, allowing you to explore the performance of your content more easily.
This is useful if, for example, you want to distribute and report on the performance of your content across multiple channels at once. There are lots of articles explaining the benefits of UTM tags across the internet. One of the best can be found here.
Create your UTM tags
You can easily create your UTM tags using Google’s URL builder. You will want to generate multiple URLs with different tags so that you have (for example) one URL for Twitter, one for LinkedIn, and one for your website. This will allow you to segregate your data by these channels later on.
Once you have added your UTM tags to one of your Doc URLs, it will look something like this:
Note - Turtl Analytics supports utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content
UTM Parameter Definitions
utm_source - The specific website the visitor came from. (e.g. google, newsletter, facebook).
utm_medium - The medium that your tracked link is featured in. (e.g. social media, email).
utm_campaign - The name of your campaign.
utm_term - Used to identify the keywords you've paid for.
utm_content - Used to differentiate similar content or links within the same ad.
Share your Turtl Doc
Publish and share your Turtl Doc across your marketing channels, remembering to use the correctly tagged URL for each one.
Explore your UTM tags in analytics
UTM tag filters will now appear in Turtl analytics. You can filter on UTM source, UTM media, and UTM campaign to get a clearer picture of how your content has performed across different channels and campaigns.
Undefined UTM tags
If you notice the UTM tag "undefined" is shown, this means we have been unable to identify the source. This can be due to someone sharing the URL (and removing the UTM parameters), so when that URL has been visited there is no utm_source present in the URL.'
Download your UTM tag data
Download your analytics reports to see UTM tag data using the drop-down next to the download button in the top right.
